When to use it (and when not to)

The text tone checker is built for the moment between drafting a reply and tapping send — the part where your gut says one thing and the keyboard says another. Use it when the message matters enough to second-guess: a first reply to someone you just met, a message you've rewritten three times, or a text you want to land after a pause. It's also useful before a hard conversation with a partner, when you want to keep warmth in and sharpness out.

Skip it for low-stakes banter and inside jokes. The scorecard is a heuristic, not a verdict — it can't read your history with this person, and it will over-penalize shorthand you use on purpose. Trust the number when it flags a real pattern (low warmth plus low confidence is a clear signal to rewrite), not when it nags you about a single emoji.

How to read the score

Each axis runs from low to high. Neediness low, warmth high, confidence medium-to-high, clarity high is the rough target for most first-reply and post-date texts. The scorecard also flags length: short messages (under 40 words) almost always read better than long ones, especially in the first few exchanges.

If one axis is dragging everything else down, fix that one thing and re-check before you rewrite the whole message. For specific patterns — how to recover when a reply went cold, how to keep a good conversation going, what to text after a long pause — see our guides on how to reply to a ghost, the dating text messages guide, and what mixed signals actually mean. They walk through the rewrite, this tool just shows you whether your draft is there yet.

What the scorecard measures

Neediness — how much the text reaches for reassurance. Lower is better; it lights up on “just checking in”, “please reply”, or double question marks.

Warmth — genuine, specific interest in them: a real question about their day, a remembered detail, a kind note. The opposite of a generic “hey.”

Confidence — states things plainly instead of hedging with “maybe” or “if you want.” A period beats a question mark when you mean what you said.

Clarity — one clean idea per text, not a scatter of questions. And Length fit — short and specific (under ~40 words) almost always lands better than a wall of text.

Is the scoring open source?

Yes. The five-dimension scoring algorithm behind this checker is published as a zero-dependency JavaScript library — tone-score on GitHub. Read it, audit it, or use it in your own project. The web version here runs entirely in your browser: nothing you paste is uploaded or stored.

Frequently asked questions

Is the text tone checker free?

Yes — fully free, no account, no sign-up. It runs entirely in your browser.

Does it store my messages?

No. The text never leaves your device; analysis happens locally in the browser.

How accurate is the scorecard?

It's a heuristic read of tone patterns (neediness, warmth, confidence, clarity), not a substitute for judgment. Use it as a quick pre-send check.
